| The one of a kind Ferrari 612 GTS Posted: 21 Sep 2010 04:00 PM PDT
As the Ferrari 612 Scaglietti’s time in the sunshine comes to an end and while waiting for the new generation, Ferrari will be helping us pass the time with a few one-of-a-kind models. This Ferrari 612 GTS is one of them. We only have a video of the car, but we presume it’s the result of Ferrari’s latest program that allows clients to create their own custom models straight from the factory in Maranello. It’s the same program that created the P540 Superfast Aperta in 2009. A standard 612 Scaglietti is powered by a V12 engine producing 540 HP, but the GTS version has been packed with 550 HP and 600 NM of torque. There will only be one unit built in the world, which basically means someone with very deep pockets will be the one driving around town with this unique mechanical beauty. | Pagani 'C9' spotted testing its air brakes in Germany Posted: 21 Sep 2010 03:00 PM PDT Pagani's new beast on wheels, codenamed the 'C9', was recently spotted by Autogespot doing some air brake testing at a German highway, giving us yet another glimpse of the superduper car that is widely expected to succeed the brand's omniscient beast, the Zonda. We've come to learn that Pagani has been testing the air brake system on the C9 and if the company decides to use the technology on the supercar, it would make the C9 the third supercar to do so after the Bugatti Veyron and the Mercedes-Benz SLR. Given the insane speeds the C9 is bound to pack, employing an air brake system on this rocket ought to be a good idea. The new Pagani supercar will be powered by an AMG sourced 6.0-liter V12 engine that will produce a total of 690 horsepower and 737 lb/ft of torque. The company's founder, Horacio Pagani, has also announced that the C9 will carry a completely new look in terms of its design, weight, distribution, materials, and dynamics. | Video: A look at how the BMW 6-Series Coupe Concept was born Posted: 21 Sep 2010 02:00 PM PDT
BMW has already released details behind the new 6 Series Coupe Concept and the car will be in attendance at the Paris Motor Show, so with all the coverage and appearances of the car, you'd think that, at some point, we'd all get tired of it. That couldn't be further from the truth. Re-designed and given a classier and more luxurious look, the new 6-Series Coupe Concept being billed as the car BMW is banking on to go to battle in a market segment that features a boatload of competitors. The concept version of the 6-Series Coupe will be unveiled at the Paris Motor Show while the production version is scheduled to be rolled out just in time for the Geneva Auto Show at the early part of 2011. While we wait for Paris, BMW was kind enough to give us a look at how the 6-Series Coupe Concept's design language came to be under the direction of Adrian Van Hooydonk, the car's chief designer. It's less than a minute long and if you're curious to watch how the design behind the new 6-Series Coupe began, it's certainly worth a watch. | Newest Season Of TopGear On BBC America On Sept. 27 Posted: 21 Sep 2010 01:00 PM PDT We all know that BBC America is like the BBC’s slow cousin. We usually get the United Kingdom’s best shows, but it takes them a while, so while BBC2 is airing TopGear’s latest season, we are stuck on season ten. Luckily for all car fans in the United States, BBC America will begin showing season 15 of the best car show on the planet. Most of the massive fans have already seen most of the episodes on their computers, but nothing beats watching those gorgeous scenes on our big televisions. Americans will get to see the new Kia Cee’d being piloted by famous stars such as Jeff Goldblum, Tom Cruise, and Cameron Diaz. The show will air on Monday nights at 9 p.m. EST. Speaking of TopGear, the first season of America’s version will debut on the History Channel in the fall. We have seen a few clips and it’s been mixed emotions, but either way, we are looking forward to it. | General Motors issues recall of 2009-2010MY Cadillac CTS and CTS-V over faulty glove boxes Posted: 21 Sep 2010 12:30 PM PDT General Motors has announced that they will be recalling over 20,000 2009-2010MYs of the Cadillac CTS and CTS-V over what appears to be dangerous glove box compartments. Of all the parts of a car's interior, we didn't know that glove compartments could poise such a threat to the safety of a front seat passenger. But as it turns out, the NHTSA ran some tests and determined that during a frontal crash where the front passenger isn't wearing a seatbelt, there's a greater risk of sustaining a leg injury due to the faulty glove box. Needless to say, tests or no tests, front passengers should never leave home without putting on their seatbelts. For their part, General Motors is issuing the recall and will replace all glove box assembly for all 20,224 affected models at no cost to the customer. The recall is expected to start on or before October 20, 2010 and owners that have cars affected by the recall are encouraged to contact Cadillac at 1.866-982-2339. | 2012 Lamborghini Jota testing on Nurburgring Posted: 21 Sep 2010 12:00 PM PDT While Lamborghini is performing a slow and sensual strip tease of their future supercar by way of a few teaser photos, spy photographers are busy taking pictures of the car testing at the Nurburgring. However, this is one case where giving away the milk for free will not stop anyone from buying the cow. The 2012 Jota will be powered by a 7.0-liter V12 engine that will produce in excess of 700bhp and 700Nm of torque (there are voices suggesting it will be 720 HP). The car will sprint from 0 to 60 mph in just 3 seconds, while top speed will be in the 225 mph area. The engine will be mated to a seven-speed, paddleshift automated manual gearbox. It will be shorter and weigh about 300lbs. less than the Murcielago. It will be built on a new carbon-fiber tub and will use as much aluminum and carbon fiber as possible to reduce weight. The only new information these spy images reveal are Reventon-style intakes and a retractable rear wing. We’ll come back with more details on the Jota as soon as it is revealed at the Paris Motor Show on September 30th. 2012 Lamborghini Jota testing on Nurburgring originally appeared on topspeed.com on Tuesday, 21 September 2010 12:00 EST. |
| Lotus gives Toyota chief Akio Toyoda his very own Elise Posted: 21 Sep 2010 12:00 PM PDT For the longest time, Lotus has been sourcing its power plants from Toyota and recently, the Proton-owned manufacturer gave Toyota boss Akio Toyoda a little token for a partnership that has successfully lasted for years. Okay, it's not so much a little token as it is a new car, and a pretty special one at that. Lotus CEO Danny Bahar recently flew to Japan to personally hand over the keys of a brand new Lotus Elise. What's more, this particular Elise actually comes with the last Toyota-sourced 2ZZ-GE VVTL-I engine to come in a Lotus. "The presentation of Toyota’s last 2ZZ engine in the Elise is a symbolic gesture of our continued respect and deep appreciation for our partner not only acknowledging our past but also looking forward to our future together," said the Lotus CEO. The partnership between Lotus and Toyota looks to be stronger than ever with the former bringing a few of its Toyota-powered models – the new Evora S and IPS models - to the Paris Motor Show. For Toyota's part, the alliance with Lotus allows the Japanese manufacturer to stamp its imprint on a brand that it thinks pretty highly of. "A Toyota engine in a Lotus car creates a completely unique drive feeling," said Toyoda. "It creates a special blend featuring the best of Lotus and Toyota that we hope many car lovers continue to experience and enjoy." | Mazda MX-5 owners set world record for largest Miata meet Posted: 21 Sep 2010 11:30 AM PDT There's no denying the popularity of the Mazda MX-5 Miata. It's so popular that a meeting of 459 Miata owners from all corners of the world at a meet in Essen, Germany doesn't look impressive enough. Except that it is; impressive enough that it landed in the Guiness Book of World Records as the largest MX-5 meet in, like, ever. Owners from 16 countries participated in the record-breaking meet, which was held at UNESCO's Zollverein World Heritage site. What's even more impressive is that the number of Miatas could have easily been more than 459 had the event organizers not turned down some of the applicants from participating. All in all, the 459 Miatas eclipsed the previous record of 249 models that was previously set in New Zealand. Like we said, 459 isn't that big a number considering the number of MX-5's loitering around the streets of the world, but hey, a record's a record, right? That, in itself, is something all those attending owners should be very proud of. | Car Buyers Aren't Interested In Celebrity Car Ads Posted: 21 Sep 2010 11:00 AM PDT Let's face it; Americans love their famous people. If we're still talking about Lindsey Lohan on news channels like CNN then it's pretty clear that these people have a pretty high ranking in most of our lives. Shouldn't things that actually matter be on those channels? Most of these people drive the latest fashionable vehicles, like the Toyota Prius and other green cars, but there are some who know about the automotive industry. Whether their knowledgeable or not, when these famous people get on the television to advertise something, the product usually sells. According to British automotive magazine, WhatCar, these endorsements only affect a few people. The magazine polled over 1,000 people and only 11 said that they would be influenced to buy a car if a famous person told them too. We have always felt these ads to be, let's call them interesting. Cadillac tried to use Kate Walsh in their ads and they were laugh out loud hilarious. Mike Rowe's advertisements for the Ford F150 aren't bad, but they're not great and Tim Allen's new voice over work for the Chevrolet Cruze always make us think of Tool Time. Jeff Bridges works with Hyundai and Justin Timberlake does stuff for Audi, but neither one makes us want the product. Tell us what you think below in the comment section. Do celebrity ads interest you, or do you find them to be idiotic. Car Buyers Aren't Interested In Celebrity Car Ads originally appeared on topspeed.com on Tuesday, 21 September 2010 11:00 EST. |
