| Hyundai Sonata Overtakes Nissan Altima For Third Place Posted: 22 Sep 2010 04:30 PM PDT We have had nothing but good things to say about the new Hyundai Sonata, expect of course for the recall issues. It won our midsize sedan test, beating out the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry, and it has been praised by numerous other media outlets. With all these awards and great comments, the Sonata began to sell very well. It began to move up the sales ladder and now, it has overtaken the Nissan Altima for third place in the midsize sedan segment, according to The Detroit News. Hyundai sold 21,399 models, just falling behind Honda’s 22,506 mark for the Accord and Toyota’s 30,000 sales for the Camry. The Korean sedan has been kicking the tails of the Ford Fusion and the Chevrolet Malibu for quite some time, but this is the first time that it has beaten a major Japanese machine. There are many reasons for this overtaking. Styling, performance, build quality, and the car’s incredible fuel economy have helped it climb easily up the ladder. In the latest episode of Jay Leno’s garage arrived the 2010 Tesla Roadster Sport 2.5. The electric roadster is powered by an electric motor which delivers around 295 lb-ft of torque to the wheels via a single-speed transmission. And even if it is an electric model, the Sport 2.5 delivers incredible performances: a sprint from 0 to 60mph in 3.7 seconds. Compared to a standard Roadster, the Sport 2.5 version receives a new look, which includes a new front fascia with diffusing vents, and rear diffuser reflecting the future of Tesla design, new seats with improved comfort, larger more supportive bolsters and a new lumbar support system and improved interior sound reduction including new front fender liner material make the cabin even quieter. | Bentley issues recall of Arnage, Azure and Brooklands models over defective hood ornament Posted: 22 Sep 2010 03:30 PM PDT Of all the things that can cause injuries during a crash, a flying hood ornament just may be the unlikeliest of them all. But the truth is, one manufacturer thinks its serious enough that they're recalling 596 of their vehicles in the US because of a malfunctioning hood ornament. You read that right: a malfunctioning hood ornament. Bizarre as it sounds, it's also true. Luxury carmaker Bentley is known for that distinguishing metal emblem in its hood that, ironically, is called "the flying B". Turns out, the mechanism that allows the emblem to fold down in the event of a collision has the potential to become corroded and as such, could fly off the hood, giving a literal meaning to it's name. As such, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has issued the recall of models of the 2007 to 2009 Arnage, Azure, and Brooklands. According to the NHTSA, Bentley will replace the ornament's mechanism at no cost to the owner. | Cadillac CTS-V V700 Coupe by Hennessey Posted: 22 Sep 2010 03:00 PM PDT A standard Cadillac CTS-V Coupe is powered by an LSA 6.2 Liter supercharged Chevrolet Corvette ZR-1 V8 engine. This allows the sports car to produce a maximum output of 556 HP and 551 lb-ft of torque. That is more than impressive for a Cadillac, but Hennessey has played with the car’s engine to make these numbers even more impressive. The tuner is offering a new V700 package that updates the engine’s output to an impressive 707 HP and 701 lbs-ft of torque. This translates into a sprint from 0 to 60 mph in 3.3 seconds and a top speed of 211 mph. At the dyno testing, with the exhaust cutouts closed, the V700 coupe posted its official numbers: 598 rear wheel horsepower and a full 631 lb-ft of torque! | Video: Nissan's Juke commercial has all the elements of weird Posted: 22 Sep 2010 02:30 PM PDT
There really isn't a whole lot of words we could use to describe this video other than if you choose words like 'spooky', 'creepy' and 'weird'. Whether or not Nissan intentionally made this Nissan Juke ad that way, well, they're the only ones that can explain it. Nevertheless, if you go past all the spookiness and look at this in a glass half full sort of way, Nissan is positioning the Juke as a vehicle that's brimming with energy, enough to power an otherwise doldrum city. If you look at it that way, then this ad isn't all that bad. Heck, that image of a pseudo Richard Simmons in a stationary bike does add a bit of humor to it, although that in itself is still a little creepy given how the whole tenet of this commercial runs. In any case, there is something to be said about this commercial. If for nothing else, we can all take comfort in knowing that the Juke crossover can never be associated as a boring car. Weird? | Mercedes SLS AMG GT3 makes race track debut at Nurburgring Posted: 22 Sep 2010 02:00 PM PDT The Mercedes SLS AMG GT3 will make its track debut this weekend in the VLN Endurance Championship at Nurburgring. This is the supercar’s first appearance under real race conditions and will serve as a sneak peek at what the vehicel could do when it hits the track for the coming motorsport season in February 2011. So, if you want to watch the new version of the SLS AMG prove its racing genes and flex its automotive muscles on the legendary Nürburgring Nordschleife, this is your chance. All you need to do is be near Nurburgring on September 25th. Entry all around the Nordschleife is free. The SLS AMG GT3 features a new new front apron with a splitter, the bonnet with central cooling air vent, wider front and rear wings, sideskirts with cooling ducts for the rear brakes, a rear diffuser and the adjustable rear aerofoil. The race car will be powered by the same 6.3-liter V8 engine, but has been tuned to deliver an impressive +600 hp, a pretty significant spike from the road-going version of the SLS AMG which comes with a "standard" 571 hp. | 1923 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost Salamanca on auction Posted: 22 Sep 2010 01:30 PM PDT High end sports cars and exclusive supercars are always a treat to come across when participating in an auction, but there is a good amount of people that go to these auctions strictly to find themselves standing in front of a classic beauty. For that group of people we bring a 1923 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost Salamanca. The Ghost will be at the Brooklands auction this Saturday, September 25th and is expected to bring in about £120,000 - £145,000. This Roll Royce Ghost, Chassis 112 JH, was one of the 1,701 units produced by the Newhaven factory in Springfield, Massachusetts and it features the exquisite Salamanca coachwork style. The history is this vehicle is especially interesting because after stints in California and New York, this vehicle traveled to South Africa where its engine almost got transferred into a boat. After its near death experience, the Ghost proved itself in the South African National Rally where it won first place in 1955 and 1960 Other vehicles scheduled for auction this Saturday are: a 1964 Aston Martin DB5 Convertible (expected to sell for £350,000 - £450,000), a 1965 Ferrari 250GTO Evocazione, a 1933 Singer Nine Le Mans, a 1962 Jaguar E-Type S1 Coupe, and a 1936 Lagonda LG45 Pillarless Sporting Saloon. Last month they revealed a tuning package for the California and today they have revealed details on a new tuning package for the F430 Scuderia. And, as usual, the tuner worked on both the exterior and the interior, as well as boosting the engine’s performances. The exterior package includes an exclusive stealth look coating - Ã la jet plane - tinted windows, taillights and blinkers, exterior mirrors, a tail diffuser, and several engine compartment coverings all made in carbon fiber. The interior not only gets fine leather applications in alcantara leather and matte carbon look, but it also gets a new high-end sound system which is extremely convenient considering the standard Scuderia doesn’t have a stereo. As for the engine upgrade, the tuner added a weight reduced valve commanded stainless steel exhaust system and a sports air filter. The result is an impressive 575 HP (up from a standard of 510 HP). The whole package is finished by 20" light alloy black rims combined with 235/30-20 front and 325/25-20 rear high performance tires. Press release after the jump. If you do, then you might fancy this piece of carbon fiber goodness. This, dear friends, is a carbon fiber 2009 Ferrari Scuderia Spider 16M and for the aforementioned price tag, you can drive home with it and be the envy of just about everybody who sees you behind the wheel of this car. It's completely one-of-a-kind. | Rolls Royce wants to expand Ghost line-up Posted: 22 Sep 2010 11:30 AM PDT Don't look now, but the recent success the Rolls Royce Ghost has had in the market this year already has company executives thinking expansion. And by expansion, we mean, building new derivatives of the Ghost model line. The Ghost, the Rolls Royce Phantom's little yet equally luxurious brother has become a huge sales boon for the BMW-owned luxury car this year with sales already hitting record numbers – since BMW took over – at 1,467 units through August. That number alone has already surpassed the total sales numbers of 1,002 units sold in 2009. In an interview done at the company headquarters in Goodwood, England, Rolls Royce Chief Executive Officer Torsten Mueller-Oetvoes noted that with the success of the model there remains a possibility of seeing a Ghost derivative down the road. "I'm quite confident that we're going to see a Ghost derivative to come," he said. "There's still a lot of potential in the market" for a less formal Rolls model." This year, Rolls Royce has set the bar for 2,000 units sold, and with the way things are going right now for the company's smaller luxury ride, the 2,000 benchmark looks to be easily reachable.
