| Audi R8 Spyder 4.2 FSI quattro Posted: 28 Sep 2010 04:30 PM PDT Usually is the other way around: automaker first bring the less powerful version, and only after that they bring the better one. But Audi decided not to follow this rule: first they brought the R8 Spyder 5.2 FSI quattro and today the 4.2 FSI quattro version. When Audi launches the R8 Spyder, it will be around $161,000. That price is for the six-speed manual models. The fancy six-speed R-tronic manu-matic is $9,000. Yes, $9,000 for a neat transmission that isn't all that good. The R8 Spyder 4.2 FSI quattro uses the same 4,2 liter V8 engine as the coupe version. The engine delivers a total of 430 hp at 7,900 rpm and 430 NM between 4,500 and 6,000 rpm and sprints the car from 0 to 60 mph in 4.8 seconds. Top speed is 185 mph. The 4.2 FSI quattro version gets LED tail lights as standard equipment, exhaust system that terminates in dual tailpipes on both the left and the right, a rear spoiler which extends automatically at 100 km/h. The cloth roof will be available in three colors: black, red and brown. The body is available in the solid finishes Ibis White and Brilliant Red; the metallic finishes Suzuka Gray, Teak Brown, Ice Silver, Jet Blue and Aurum Beige; and the pearl effect finishes Daytona Gray, Sepang Blue, Lava Gray and Phantom Black. The windshield frame is coated with anodized aluminum. Updated 08/26/2010: Despite the fact Audi has unveiled details on the R8 Spyder 4.2 FSI quattro long time ago, this is the first time we actually have the chance to see images of the real thing. So, check the gallery to see it! Updated 09/28/2010: Audi announced today the US prices for their latest addition to the R8 line-up: the R8 Spyder 4.2 FSI quattro that will go on sale in late 2010. The R8 4.2 quattro V8 Spyder (Manual) version is priced at $127,700 and the R8 4.2 quattro V) Spyder (R tronic) at $136,800. Press release after the jump. | Video: Another Ferrari 599 GTO spotted doing some test runs Posted: 28 Sep 2010 04:00 PM PDT
Obviously, we can't get enough of the Ferrari 599 GTO. Not only do we meticulously prowl the Web for any relevant news about the new bad boy from Maranello, but we do so hoping that we'd stumble upon new videos of the supercar, even if it only shows a camouflaged 599 GTO running some test laps. Apparently, today's our lucky day. Today’s video comes from our boy, Marchitteno, who has once again spotted a black on black Ferrari 599 GTO with the unmistakable Rosso Scuderia racing livery. This spy video, like most videos we've seen in the past, doesn't show the new Ferrari supercar in all its glittering glory, but to us, that doesn’t really matter. What we can't piece out with the car's complete aesthetics, the riveting and unmolested roar of that engine as it accelerates down a street more than makes up for it. Some people enjoy rock music; others may find Justin Bieber to be all that. But if you ask us, the sound of an accelerating Ferrari is the perfect music for our ears. | Is Lamborghini teasing the Sesto Elemento concept? Posted: 28 Sep 2010 03:25 PM PDT Lamborghini is teasing us for quite some time now with a new supercar, or concept set to be revealed at the Paris Auto Show. But this is the very first time you actually got something on this teasers. Or at least we hope so. It seems that the thing in the teaser images is the Sesto Elemento (trnslated to English means Sixth Element), a concept car created almost entirely from carbon fiber (if you remember the fourth teaser was saying "the sixth element - carbon fiber"). It is expected for the new concept to weight 2,200 pounds (yes, that’s less than 1000 kilos) and to sprint from 0 to 60 mph in less than 2,5 seconds. With a V10 engine under the hood, the Sesto will be able to hit a top speed of no less than 217.5 mph. Most likely this new concept previews Lamborghini’s future supercars, so we are more than excited about it! | Video: Mercedes SLS GT3 crashes during its Nurburgring debut Posted: 28 Sep 2010 03:00 PM PDT
As we announced last week, the Mercedes SLS AMG GT3 made its race track debut this past weekend in the VLN Endurance Championship at Nurburgring. While everyone expected this to be a great event, it didn’t have such a joyous end for the SLS GT3. The car, driven by Bernd Schneider, went out of control and crashed into a Corvette driven by Christian Hohenadel. Bernd Schneider, five-time DTM Champion and now an AMG brand ambassador, was behind the wheel at the start. Schneider was already in second place by the first bend, however contact with the leading car on the second bend caused him to spin and collide with the following car. After a 25-minute break for repairs, Bernd Schneider returned to the race three laps behind the leaders, and was able to hold his own without problems in the lineup of GT3 cars. However, it only finished in the 91st position. Not exactly the type of debut Mercedes had in mind. One more video after the jump. The watch, which will only be built in a limited number of 1,000 units, features an ingenious multiple time zone display system and serves as an international ambassador of the legendary British automobile tradition. | Bugatti 16C Galibier will be less powerful but more luxurious than Veyron Posted: 28 Sep 2010 02:00 PM PDT Believe it or not, Bugatti's successor to the vaunted Veyron supercar will be less powerful than its predecessor. That's the word coming out of the Volkswagen's exotic auto brand after Bugatti has made it clear that it wants a different direction for the 16C Galibier four-seater sedan: less power, more luxury. The 16C Galibier, which was made entirely from carbon fiber and aluminum, is expected to go on sale sometime in 2013 where only 300 models will be built. The four-seater sedan will come with the same 8.0-liter W16 engine that powers the Veyron with the big difference being that unlike the latter, which employed turbochargers, the 16C Galibier will 'only' come with superchargers that will produce somewhere around 800 horsepower. We're not sure how 800 horsepower qualifies as 'less powerful', but given that the Veyron was once the fastest production car on the planet, we're going to take their word for it – ridiculous as it sounds. | Top Gear Season 13 DVD scheduled for release today Posted: 28 Sep 2010 01:00 PM PDT The 13th season of Top Gear is finally going to be released on DVD today, ending months of waiting among fans of the UK auto show. Yep, we’re included in that group. You might remember that season 13 included a ton of memorable segments, including a race of 1,000 horsepower machines – the Bugatti Veyron, the Lamborghini Murcielago SV, and the McLaren F1 – in Abu Dhabi. It was also in season 13 where Richard Hammond and James May decided to take on the unenviable task of racing a Porsche Panamera against a stamped envelope, Jay Leno appeared as a guest and took the challenge of the Reasonably Priced Car, Ken Block showing off his rally skills in slow-mo, and, of course, Michael Schumacher appearing on the show as The Stig. Yep. Good times, indeed. The DVD will also come with a load of extra features, behind-the-scenes shenanigans, and never-before-seen interviews, making the $24.95 price tag all the more worth it. | Segway owner dies after falling off a cliff Posted: 28 Sep 2010 12:30 PM PDT Jimi Heselden, the British millionaire who bought the Segway company from its American inventor, Dean Kamen, earlier this year, was killed last weekend after the Segway he was driving fell off a cliff down into a river near his home in West Workshire, UK. Surreal as it sounds, it's also true. A call was placed to the West Yorkshire Police reporting of an incident where a man fell off a cliff straight into the River Wharfe. Police immediately went to the site and recovered a two-wheeled vehicle – possibly a Segway – with the 62-year old Heselden being pronounced dead at the scene. There's no word on how it happened, but the police don’t believe there was any foul play involved. "At this time we do not believe the death to be suspicious," according to a statement released by the police department. We can't possibly fathom how difficult it must be for the family of Jimi Heselden. We send our deepest condolences to the family for Mr. Heselden's unfortunate passing. | Lamborghini reveals teaser number five Posted: 28 Sep 2010 12:00 PM PDT Alright folks, we’re almost there! Lamborghini has released teaser number five out of the six due to be shown before their supercar is revealed at the Paris Auto Show in just a few days. This new teaser reveals the "Lightening technologies," whatever that means. The whole teaser thing is just getting more and more vague. There’s just one more teaser to go, and we’re sure that will not be shedding any more light on this mysterious supercar. We’re still trying to figure out which part of the car this shady picture belongs to. We have to remind you that, despite everyone's expectations, this teaser does not reveal the long rumored Jota, as rumors suggest that Lamborghini will not be bringing that highly anticipated model to Paris. Now, people are talking about a new concept car, known as the 83X, that will preview the company's future technology. And since Lamborghini is only teasing us with images that do not reveal anything, we can’t tell you more about this new model. But stay with us, the Paris Show is just around the corner, and then we’ll have the official details for you! Check out the rest of the teaser photos after the jump!
