| German tuning firm, Kelleners Sport, announces its comeback Posted: 06 Oct 2010 04:00 PM PDT After a lengthy hibernation from the world of tuning, BMW tuning firm, Kelleners Sport, is making its way back to its roots by sharing a booth with Vredestein at the upcoming Essen Motorshow. The tuning firm’s last offering was in 2007 with the introduction of their kit for the BMW 3-Series, but for their comeback special, Kellener will be presenting the completely revised BMW 5 Series (F10). The F10’s world premiere will come with two new wheel designs and a program tailored for the entire series of BMW models. Part of finding their way back to the tuning world consisted of finding a new place to call home. Kelleners found their place in the form of a manor house near the town of Merzig in the Competence Centre Gut Wiesenhof in Germany. Ironically, this location is right next to Carlsson, the Mercedes Benz specialist. Kelleners Sport’s experience in the tuning industry dates all the way back to 1991 when the BMW tuning company was formed by active professional racing driver, Ralf Kelleners. With a tagline stating, "Bridging the gap between you and racing," we are confident that this tuning form will not disappoint! Welcome back, Kelleners, and we can’t wait to see what you do with the BMW M5 F10! | Posted: 06 Oct 2010 03:30 PM PDT The 2012 Volkswagen Beetle has finally been scooped up playing out on the streets. Although this particular model was designed to look like the current model, there are a number of features on this car that hint that this could very well be a new and sportier Beetle. The folks at Volkswagen have made it no secret that the new Beetle will come with a "radical design" that will far exceed all of our expectations. Whether that actually happens is still subjective and remains to be seen. Either way, the new Beetle, which will share its platform with the new Volkswagen Jetta, will attract its fair share of attention because, well, it's the Beetle. The new Beetle will also come with a number of engine options including a 1.2-liter 105 bhp, a 1.4-liter 160 bhp, and a 2.0 210 bhp. Diesel engines will also be available in the form of a 1.6 105 bhp and a 2.0 TDI 140 bhp. Regardless of when we see Volkswagen's latest take on their most popular model - there’s talk that a concept version may be previewed at the LA Motor Show - this first photo of the 2012 Beetle does give us an idea of what to expect. At the very least, we're looking at a far edgier and more aggressive-looking Beetle than what we've seen in the past. | BMW 1M Coupe revealed in Paris, but not at the show Posted: 06 Oct 2010 03:00 PM PDT The BMW 1M Coupe is a project that has left much to be desired in the form of teaser images and sneak preview videos, but, as BMW was showcasing the 6-Series Coupe Concept, three versions of the 5-Series Touring, and the X3 Crossover at the Paris Motor Show, the sporty little Coupe was taking part in another mini show of its own. Out and about in the streets of Paris, the BMW 1M is being shown in these pictures while pieces of its black and tasteless tarp were slowing being peeled off to show glimpses of what we all have been waiting to see for quite some time now. Clearly BMW wanted the 1M to play some part in Paris' festivities, but the incomplete coupe only saw the pavement located on the outside of the major auto show allowing BMW to dominate both sides of the auto world during the French auto show. The BMW 1M Coupe is said to carry the same type of engine found in the 135i and producing 306hp. Some of the changes appearing on this model will be a central duct, brake air ducts, an additional two ducts on the bonnet, two air intakes on the front wings for a typical M look, and the bar that incorporates the side indicator light. It will also have widened fenders, integrated duckbill trunk spoiler, upgraded M wheels, and large brakes with cross-drilled rotors. All of these tweaks and pinches will be available in a limited number of about 2,700 units, but these teaser images only show us a peek at a piece of the front bumper and the back bumper which allows for a glance at the quad exhaust. These offerings also allow us to view the new wheels on the sporty coupe. | Americana Manhasset Concours d'Elegance to kick off on October 10th Posted: 06 Oct 2010 02:00 PM PDT
October 10th is turning out to be a big day for Americana Manhasset, an upscale mall in Manhasset, New York. That's the day when it will be hosting its 6th annual Concours d'Elegance. Themed as the "Salute to Classic Coachbuilders of the 20th Century", the event is expected to attract over 200 privately owned vehicles, all of whom will surely have their eyes set on scooping up either the 'Best in Show' title and 'Best in Class' title. As part of the festivities, event organizers have tapped no less than Tom Tjaarda, the auto designer that has plied his craft for two of the most esteemed coachbuilders in the world, Pininfarina and Ghia. Another attraction that's sure to get its fair share of attention is the Baja Boot, the very same car that the legendary racer Steve McQueen drove in a number of off-road events, including the 1968 Stardust 7-11 and the 1969 Baja 1000. Some of the participants for this event are Aston Martin Long Island, Autosport Designs Inc. - Lotus Motor Cars of Long Island, Bentley Long Island, Exotic Classics, Ferrari Maserati of Long Island, Manhattan Motorcars, Porsche Roslyn, Rolls Royce of Long Island, and Universal Autosports. | Lamborghini and Callaway Golf strike partnership to develop Forged Composite Posted: 06 Oct 2010 01:00 PM PDT Lamborghini and Callaway Golf may come from two different worlds, but the two companies have one thing in common: both are strong proponents of Forged Composite, considered the lightest yet strongest material that both companies have ever used. Forged Composite is lighter, stronger, and more precise than both traditional woven carbon fiber or titanium with the material encompassing more than 500,000 intertwined turbostatic fibers per inch that allow it to have a higher threshold for withstanding extreme conditions that both Lamborghini and Callaway Golf are accustomed to. According to the joint press release, Forged Composite "is one-third the density of titanium, yet features a greater load-carrying capacity per unit mass in bending." And in case you're interested, here's a nice little trivia for you Lamborghini fans out there; the supercar maker used Forged Composite on the Lamborghini Sesto Elemento Concept. We're digging this partnership between Lamborghini and Callaway Golf for a number of reasons. First, they both have similar goals, but they don't belong to the same industry so they can work prosperously together while not stepping on each other's toes in the process. Let's just hope that the research and development involved with Forged Composite isn't as expensive as it's expected to be. Otherwise, what would be the point? | ABT Brings the Noise to the Audi TTRS & RS5 Posted: 06 Oct 2010 12:00 PM PDT World renown VAG tuner, ABT Sportline, has released an all-new performance exhaust for the Audi TTRS and RS5 models. Anyone who drives an extremely sporty car of the caliber of an Audi RS5 or Audi TT-RS likes acoustics which suit the performance potential of their racer. Owners of premium cars from Ingolstadt expect a sound that represents the power of the car without being too loud, and is also produced in the best possible quality. For the RS5 and TT-RS, ABT Sportsline has developed an exhaust system which meets the high demands of their customers: the sound is a lot more powerful and striking over all speed ranges and seems even more dynamic. At the same time it complies with the legally prescribed maximum noise levels. The good acoustics which will amaze fans of sporty vehicles suit both the RS racing sound and everyday driving. Thanks to the high-quality stainless steel technology the exhaust system is extremely robust and durable – an investment in a long car life full of driving enjoyment. The new exhaust system from ABT Sportsline consists of middle and rear mufflers, which run from the catalytic converter to the rear of the vehicle. With this placement, the system fits perfectly with the Audi design as the standard appearance is retained. The result is simple; the unmistakable RS look plus a powerful ABT sound and performance gain that allow the special set-up to be ideal for everyday use. | Rare 1959 Ferrari GT sold for $3.26 million on Ebay Posted: 06 Oct 2010 11:00 AM PDT Cars this rare usually are sold at auction sites like Barrett Jackson or Pebble Beach, and not on Ebay. So how this 1959 Ferrari GT was sold on Ebay for $3.2 million, we'll never know. It's not a knock on Ebay. It's just that we don't see these types of authentic classics on that site so you'll have to forgive us for the initial shock. Okay, now that we've gotten over it – at least a bit – this rare and exotic Ferrari was sold by its owner from Pittsburgh and, even more surprising, was that it was bid on 86 times before the winning bidder scooped it for $3.2 million. A Ferrari being sold for $3.2 million might be a little steep, but this particular car is nowhere near what you consider 'typical', even for Ferrari's standards. The car – its official name is the Ferrari California Spyder 250 GT CS – comes with a 12-cylinder engine, a manual transmission, and is only one of nine models that come with a Tipo 508 D aluminum body frame. It is also one of the first Ferraris to be outfitted with disc brakes, which at that time, was akin to having a car made out of forged composite today. | Mechanics crash another Lamborghini Murcielago LP670-4 SuperVeloce Posted: 06 Oct 2010 10:00 AM PDT We certainly hope this isn't becoming a trend similar to the one that plagued the Ferrari 458 Italia, but there's beginning to be an increasing number of incidents involving Lamborghini car crashes. There was an incident involving a Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 Roadster that crashed last weekend. Turn the calendar a few more days and we have another Lambo meeting the same fate. This time, the supercar is a Lamborghini Murcielago LP670-4 SuperVeloce that crashed after two mechanics in Germany decided to take it for a nice little joyride after having its oil changed. As is the case with reckless mechanics these days, they ended up crashing the LP670-4 SuperVeloce so bad that the two suffered some pretty serious injuries. And if that isn't enough, the incurring damages resulting from the crash are a staggering €400,000 – that's over half-a-million dollars if you convert it to Benjamins. Talk about a double whammy, huh? We're just hoping that those two mechanics recover from their injuries, although we're thinking that the pain from the accident won’t be as bad as having to foot the bill for repairing that crashed Lamborghini. | Another rendering of the 2012 BMW M6 Coupe pops up Posted: 06 Oct 2010 09:00 AM PDT The BMW Concept 6-Series Coupe is becoming a popular choice among car artists to flex their rendering muscles and work on what the next-generation BMW M6 ought to look like. We've already seen one rendering a few weeks ago that was based on the just-revealed Concept 6-Series Coupe. This time, Bimmerpost's Alpine325ci takes a stab at his own version of the future M6. Just like most of the M6 models we've seen in the past, Alpine325ci incorporates a number of design elements that are usually found in the M6, including a redefined bumper, fresh side skirts, and allow wheels, all of which he decided to add to the Concept 6-Series Coupe. Comparing it to the other rendering we saw before, Alpine325ci's take looks fresher and less intimidating than the other rendering. Make no mistake, both score aces on our scorecard, although if we're going to pick one, we'd choose this by a very slight margin. | Aston Martin is the "coolest" brand in the UK Posted: 05 Oct 2010 11:00 PM PDT We didn't find it the least bit surprising to find out that our British chaps consider Aston Martin as the country's "coolest" brand. Home country advantage aside, there's a lot to like about Aston Martin, and apparently, the folks over at the UK seem to think so too. In a survey – the Superbrands Cool Survey - conducted by the Center for Brand Analysis in the UK, Aston Martin came out on top as the coolest brand in the country, beating out 500 other companies in the study. Over 2,000 editorial and bran consultants were invited to share there inputs on a number of companies and the resulting conclusion determined that Aston Martin is the coolest brand in the UK, trumping other worldwide luminaries, including the iPhone, Harley-Davidson, Ferrari and Blackberry. Ok, so it's not exactly a shock to see Aston Martin on top of the UK's cool rankings, although we can't help but think that there may have been some form of bias here given that the study was done at the same country that Aston Martin calls home. Continued after the jump. Aston Martin is the "coolest" brand in the UK originally appeared on topspeed.com on Tuesday, 5 October 2010 23:00 EST. |
