| Nissan jumps into the custom graphic wraps bandwagon Posted: 07 Oct 2010 04:30 PM PDT A few months ago, Ford struck a deal with Original Wraps to create custom vinyl wraps for the Ford Fiesta. Now, it looks like another manufacturer is looking to dig in to the custom vinyl wrap pie. Nissan's jumping on-board and unlike Ford, they're receiving custom wraps for a number of their models. The first Nissan vehicle to receive a customized vinyl wrap is the Nissan Cube, which will be followed by the Nissan Juke, and then the Nissan Frontier. More products are expected to be added in the future, possibly for a number of newer Nissan models. According to Original Wraps, each of the wraps have a life span of up to three years and will be installed by a professional and can also be taken down easily without the fear of leaving any marks on the car. Contrary to what others may think - that vinyl wraps are a little tacky - these wraps for Nissan actually look pretty cool. You can even customize your own design according to your personal whim. But if you're a dude, we highly suggest you stay away from that "Flower Power" design. | 2012 Lexus GS spied; GS-F to follow Posted: 07 Oct 2010 04:00 PM PDT The current generation Lexus GS has been around for quite awhile with its sales starting way back in 2006, so to say that the luxury car was due for a little refresh is a bit of an understatement. This is especially true considering the competition is heating up with the upgraded Mercedes E-Class and the BMW 5-Series. Alas, the car gods have spoken and test mules for the next generation GS have been spotted. The new Lexus GS will be launched in 2012 and will, for the first time, get a GS-F version. The 2012 GS will be built on a brand new platform which will be sportier and more efficient. The engine line-up will include a new V6 engine and a 3.5 liter engine that will replace the current 4.6-liter V-8. A hybrid version has also been confirmed. As for the GS-F version, it won’t get the same 4.8 Liter V10 engine as the LF-A. Instead Lexus will offer an upgraded version of the 5.0-liter V-8 from the IS-F, developing around 450 HP. It will also get a torque vectoring differential on the rear axle and a weight reduction thanks to the use of carbon-fiber. The GS-F will go on sale in 2013. 2012 Lexus GS spied; GS-F to follow originally appeared on topspeed.com on Thursday, 7 October 2010 16:00 EST. |
| Top Gear Live ‘Prototype' World Tour takes off in November Posted: 07 Oct 2010 03:00 PM PDT Ben Collins may have jumped on the Fifth Gear boat, but the Top Gear threesome of James May, Jeremy Clarkson, and Richard Hammond don’t seem to have noticed as they prepare to embark on their 2010 Prototype Tour commencing in London on November 4th. And what better way to market the start of this grand tour then by having May and Clarkson (Hammond was not in attendance) take on a Boeing 747 from the Top Gear track at Dunsfold Park, Surrey. The Top Gear Live 'Prototype' World Tour promises to be the "most exciting, ambitious and complex automotive stage show ever," and considering the source, we tend to believe it! About 300,000 fans across seven cities around the world will take part in the tour as modified and crazy vehicles take the stage. Some of the absurd models include the first ever transparent car, completely transformed Porsches, and a battle between the "Godzilla" Nissan GT-R and a helicopter. And the battle doesn’t take place outside. "Car stunt shows used to involve standing in rain soaked concrete car parks watching men in branded hats driving round in circles," said Clarkson. "But Top Gear Live continues to prove that proper theatre with cars is possible and yet again, we've pushed the boundaries of car theatre for this 'Prototype Tour'. It's ambitious, but for once, it isn't complete rubbish." The tour will start at the MPH The Prestige and Performance Motor Show at Earls Court, London from November 4th-7th. This should be a step up for the MPH show which was a hoot to begin with. Hit the jump for the press release including locations and dates for the rest of the Prototype Tour. | Posted: 07 Oct 2010 02:30 PM PDT Eventually Pagani will be able to have a small parade solely using the one-off models being created from the Zonda. We’ve already seen two special edition Zondas each limited to only one unit - the Zonda HH and the Zonda Uno - and now we are getting a third. The Zonda 750 is the newest addition to the Zonda one-offs and, while there are no official details on the car just yet, we presume that the "750" name stands for the number of horses galloping under the hood. And if we continue on with the 750 horsepower motif, then we can presume that the Zonda 750 will feature the same engine as the Zonda R: a V12 AMG engine that delivers 750 hp (100 more than the Zonda F) at 8000 rpm and 524 lb. ft. of torque. This new special edition comes with lots of custom parts, a special exterior paint, and back window. Although the car is based off of the Cinque, the custom parts allow the vehicle to get its own individual look. Stay tuned! We will get back soon with more details on this special edition Zonda, including the owner (most likely an Arabian one) and more details about the car’s performances and special customization parts! | Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 Project Dakhan by SR Auto Group Posted: 07 Oct 2010 02:00 PM PDT This may not be quite as dramatic of a reveal as the Audi R8 Dione done by SR Auto Group, but pictures of the Canadian tuner's next project – the Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 Project Dakhan – seem to speak for themselves in terms of aesthetic beauty. Of course, this was a simple task considering the Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 is a hot car all on its own. So far, SR Auto Group has added ADV1 (model ADV.1 05) rims which seem to be the only teasing addition to the super car except for the sleek, and always pleasing, all black exterior. Any other modifications made under the hood, or otherwise, have been sealed tight. However, the subtle changes made to the vehicle at this point were enough to pique our interest, especially since we have seen plenty of projects done by SR Auto Group that have exceeded our expectations, such as the Audi S5 Typhon and the Audi R8 V10 Project Valkyrie. Coincidentally, both of these projects also came in all black mode possibly suggesting a future trend for our Canadian friends. We'll keep you posted on any other details we can scrounge up for this hot little Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 Project Dakhan. | Posted: 07 Oct 2010 01:00 PM PDT As you probably know by now, the next generation SLK will be making its world debut sometime next year. And as these things go, Mercedes will be pulling the same teaser image nonsense that we have seen time and time again (Lamborghini Sesto Elemento ring a bell?). The first teaser for the future sports car reveals a glass roof for the SLK which Merc says can be adjusted thanks to a new system called "Magic Sky Control" seen here on a pre-production SLK R 172 prototype. The transparency of this panorama roof is controlled by electrically-governed particles that can shift to adjust how much light is filtered into the car. The technology is said to help keep away UV and infrared rays and can reduce the 1,000 watts per square meter into a measly 50-200 watts. Impressive, but you can’t get it for free. The price for this technology is an extra 2,000 euro ($2,700 at the current exchange rates) on top of the base price for the car. Meanwhile, the Mercedes SLK is still scampering about with its bland black camouflage, so we’ll have to wait for more teasers to appear to get better details for the next generation sports car. | Posted: 07 Oct 2010 12:30 PM PDT Toyota will be showing up to the SEMA Show with a very special Tacoma pick-up truck called the X-Runner "Ready to Race" (RTR). This new model is powered by a modified version of Tundra’s mighty 5.7-liter V-8. Thanks to a new supercharger and an intake kit, the engine now delivers an impressive 504 HP and 550 lb-ft of torque. The new X-Runner RTR comes with a fabricated steel driveshaft, a relocated exhaust from behind the passenger-side rear wheel to under the cab, and livery inspired by the 1968 Dan Gurnery Mercury Cougar XR7-G pony car. The number "95" on the RTR’s doors refers to the Tacoma's first model year. It also gets painted front fender badging that resembles the Tundra’s similarly positioned 5.7-liter i-Force V-8 emblems and a tornado logo next to the words "TRD supercharged" in front of the hood’s air inlet. At testings, the new RTR sprinted from 0 to 60 mph in 3.95 seconds, 3.85 seconds, and 3.76 seconds (three different tests) and ran the quarter mile in 12.01 seconds at 116.57 mph. | FPV launches first-ever supercharged GT Posted: 07 Oct 2010 12:00 PM PDT Not everyone is turning to electric vehicles, and we are pretty psyched about it. Ford Performance Vehicles Australia is stepping it up a bit by putting together their very first supercharged V8-engined GT in their history. This sports car is being rocked by a new 5.0 liter V8 engine and a custom Eaton supercharger that will be offered in all GT, GT-P, and GT E models. Fitted with an all-aluminum design with double overhead cams and 32 valves configuration, the new V8 engine can deliver 450 HP and 570Nm of torque. This translates into a pretty good slap in the face for the recently unveiled HSV E-Series 3 whose engine line tops out at 442hp. Looks like they are getting some competition now. And as an added bonus, FPV’s new V8 engine will be individually hand-built for each car and will be more powerful, more fuel efficient, and cleaner than the previous 5.4-liter engine. Next to the new engine, the GT gets 19in five-spoke alloys with a machined face and Dark Argent accents. The GT-P gets 19in five-spoke alloys with a machined face and Sparkle Silver accents and the GT E gets 19in 10-spoke alloys finished in Alpine Silver. The GT and GT-P will be available in 11 colors matched with a three stripe combination and the GT E has eight exterior colors with two interior trim combinations. For being the very first GT supplied by Australia’s Ford, the new GT is not half bad. We are curious to see what the next generation will bring. Press release after the jump. | Lincoln considers an all-new luxury pickup Posted: 07 Oct 2010 11:30 AM PDT It seems that Lincoln has just received another chance. In the next four years the company will get seven all-new or significantly revised vehicles, including a pick-up truck model. If this rumor proves to be true, the Lincoln pick-up truck will be the the most luxurious and expensive pickup in Ford's truck lineup. If you remember the Ford F-250 Super Chief concept truck unveiled at the 2006 Detroit Auto Show, then you have a clue on what the future model will look like. And while the exterior will be defined by sheet metal, the interior will be highlighted by a stretched cab similar to the Ram 3500 Mega Cab configuration. Expect not only lots of leather and aluminum insertions, but also LCD televisions for the second row seats. The Ford F-250 Super Chief concept was the world's first vehicle with Tri-Flex fueling, enabling the supercharged V-10 to run for 500 miles between fill-ups on hydrogen, E85 ethanol or gasoline. | Jaguar C-X75 heads to production...Eventually Posted: 07 Oct 2010 11:00 AM PDT It seems that the feedback for the new Jaguar C-X75 was pretty favorable and Jaguar intends to offer a production version for the recently unveiled 780 HP supercar. On top of making the decision to produce the electric car, Jaguar also stated they would be offering up 2000 units a year, a pretty high number in terms of anniversary vehicles (this is one of the vehicles Jaguar released for their 75th anniversary). A waiting period will have to go into effect, however, because Jaguar is still testing the gas turbine engines that were found on the concept version. In total, customers will have to wait between five-seven years for Jaguar to test and produce these engines: "We're talking two-to-three years for implementation of the gas turbine technology, then another three-to-four years to integrate into a vehicle," says Jag's head of advanced powertrain Tony Harper. "The cost of developing the gas turbines for production could be in the C-X75's favour, being significantly less than an equivalent IC engine, running into the "tens of millions". The C-X75 concept car featured two 96-horsepower micro gas turbines that force fuel into a plug-in li-ion battery back. Once all that is said on done, there are four electric motors, one for each wheel, that together deliver an outstanding 778 HP and 1600Nm (1180lb ft) of torque. Top speed is 205 mph.
